NEW! The Colorado Supreme Court adopted amendments to the rules and regulations governing continuing legal and judicial education in Colorado, effective July 1, 2021. Starting with attorneys with the three-year CLE compliance period that began January 1, 2021, and will end December 31, 2023, Colorado attorneys will need to complete at least two credit hours in equity, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI) and at least five credit hours in legal ethics or legal professionalism. However, the total number of required CLE credit hours remains 45.

A. Active Member Minimum MCLE Requirements.

Active Members must earn a minimum of 15 credit hours of approved CLE each reporting year. Of those 15 credit hours, the member must earn at least 10 credit hours by attending interactive seminars as defined in Rule 9. The member may not earn more than 5 credit hours through “other methods” as defined in Rule 9.

B. Professional Fitness and Integrity Requirements.

Of the 15 credit hours of CLE required each reporting year, at least 2 credit hours must be in Professional Fitness and Integrity activities. These activities must meet the standards set out in Rule 8B and may be in any or all of the following 3 content areas:

Professional Responsibilities/Ethics. Activities on understanding and complying with accepted principles of professional conduct and responsibility as established by the Montana Rules of Professional Conduct or established by other state or national rules of professional conduct for lawyers.
Fitness to Practice. Subject to the limitations in subsection (d) below:
Activities on preventing, recognizing, and responding effectively to personal substance abuse, addictive disorders, stress, and/or mental health issues, including information on available lawyer assistance programs.
Activities on recognizing, reporting, assisting, and supporting attorneys affected by substance abuse, addictive disorders, stress, and/or mental health issues.
Stress management activities as they relate to the practice of law if they focus on developing awareness of stress-related problems in the practice of law, including activities that focus on personality traits susceptible to stress, work/life balance, recognizing signs of stress in oneself or one’s colleagues, instituting preventative measures individually, and the development of policies within the law firm or legal department for dealing with stress-impaired attorneys.
A member shall not receive credit under this Rule for activities focusing in significant part on techniques or exercises related to these issues - e.g., breathing exercises, meditation, yoga.
Activities on acknowledging and advancing the elimination of bias and encouraging diversity and inclusion of all persons in the legal system regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, culture, national origin, social origin or condition, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disabilities.

  • At least one credit hour must be in cybersecurity, privacy, and data protection.


Newly-admitted attorneys  must earn a total of 32 CLE credit hours (with 16 credit hours each year) during the two-year newly admitted cycle.
  • At least 7 of these 16 credit hours per year must be in Law Practice Management, Areas of Professional Practice, and/or Cybersecurity, Privacy and/or Data Protection-General.
  • At least 6 must be in the 'Skills' Credit Category.
  • At least 3 must be in the 'Ethics and Professionalism' credit category.
  • You must complete at least 1 credit in Cybersecurity as part of the 32-credit requirement in either Year 1 or Year 2 as part of the 16 credit-requirement for that year in either Cybersecurity General or Cybersecurity Ethics (or a combination of the two).
  • Courses in each credit category must be taken in a suitable format: either in the traditional live setting, via fully interactive video conference, or via simultaneous transmission with synchronous interactivity where questions are allowed during the program.
  • Courses must also be 'transitional', designed to enable attorneys to develop a foundation in the practical skills, techniques, and procedures that are essential to the practice of law.
  • LearnFormula has confirmed directly with the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board (as of July 28th, 2023) that its online transitional courses qualify as "simultaneous transmission with synchronous interactivity" in format (via participation monitoring and a Q&A function), and so may be taken by newly admitted attorneys to satisfy their CLE requirements in any of the relevant credit categories.

NEW! Effective September 18, 2020, the Supreme Court ordered amendments to the MCLE Rules and Regulations that move the MCLE compliance deadlines to the spring. Reporting period end dates have changed from December 31 to April 30 of the following year, and reporting deadlines have changed from January 31 to May 31. NEW! Effective July 1, 2020, the total hour requirement per two-year reporting period for attorneys has increased from 20 to 24 hours. The new rules require that at least 12 of the 24 required hours be either Moderated Programming or Non-Moderated Programming with Interactivity as a Key Component and limit the total number of hours of Non-Moderated Programming Without Interactivity to 6 of the 24 required hours. At least one credit hour must be earned per reporting period in Diversity and Inclusion Programming and at least one credit hour must be earned per reporting period in Attorney Wellness Programming. Additionally, excess credit earned in the second year of a reporting period can now be carried over to the next reporting period.
