The course will compare and contrast the international community's perspective on privacy and data protection with that of the United States.

Students will examine the US perspective on privacy and data protection in terms of property rights and ownership of information, while Europe's approach emphasizes the protection of personal information and government regulatory oversight. The course will also cover recent data breaches and their implications for privacy and data protection. Students will learn about effective strategies for building strong relationships with customers and the American Data Privacy Protection Act introduced last year with strong bipartisan support.

Students will analyze state-level privacy regulations and the establishment of task forces for data privacy. They will explore the challenges faced by tech companies as a result of the patchwork of privacy rules from different states and the lack of federal clarity.
