Navigate the evolving landscape of Name, Image, and Likeness rights in college athletics

This course, "NIL Developments: Trends and Future Implications," explores the transformative impact of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights on college athletics. We'll examine the historical context of NCAA amateurism, the legal challenges that led to NIL's emergence (including O'Bannon v. NCAA and Alston v. NCAA), and the resulting changes in recruiting, athlete compensation, and university budgets.
The course delves into the opportunities and challenges presented by NIL, including financial literacy for athletes, legal guidance for contract negotiation, personal brand building, time management strategies, and career development. We will analyze various NIL revenue streams, such as social media endorsements, merchandise deals, personal appearances, and local business partnerships. Furthermore, we will discuss the complexities of NIL regulations, including state laws, NCAA policies, and the role of NIL collectives. Finally, the course will analyze the potential for college athletes to be classified as employees, the implications of that classification, and the ongoing evolution of the NIL landscape.
Upon completion of this course, students will understand the historical context and legal foundation of NIL, be able to analyze various NIL revenue streams and associated risks, and critically evaluate the ongoing debates surrounding athlete compensation, collective bargaining, and the future of college athletics.
