About This Course

This course provides an overview of the federal legalization of cannabis in the United States, its economic impact, challenges in the pharmaceutical industry, medical uses of cannabis, the legalization of hemp and CBD, the FDA's stance on CBD use, tax setup for cannabis business owners, federal legalization challenges, and the impact of hemp farming regulations.

Learn about the history and current state of cannabis legalization, including its Schedule I classification, the Cole memorandum, and the federal government's hands-off approach. You will also gain an understanding of the economic benefits of legalizing cannabis, such as tax revenue and job creation, as well as the challenges faced by the pharmaceutical industry due to the complexity of cannabis. Students will learn about the medical uses of cannabis and the variation in qualifying conditions across states, as well as the legal status of hemp and CBD and the tension between state and federal regulations.

The course will also cover the FDA's stance on CBD use, tax implications for cannabis business owners, federal legalization challenges, and the impact of hemp farming regulations on farmers. By the end of the course, you will have a broad understanding of the legal, economic, and medical implications of cannabis in the United States.

As the chair of the Tax Committee of the New York State Bar Association's Cannabis Law Section and a member of the section's Executive Committee, Jason is at the epicenter of cannabis law and policy developments in New York State. This places him in a unique position to help New York State set the highest possible legal and business standards for legalized cannabis products. Jason also serves as the New York State Bar Association Committee on Cannabis Law Tax Section liaison.
