Representing an appellant or an appellee in the Second or Third Circuit can be a challenging prospect, even for those accustomed to practicing in the tri-state appellate courts. Attendees will learn the methods for initiating and filing appeals in the Second and Third Circuits, including an overview of the rules, an explanation of the many required forms, timing considerations, requirements for briefs and appendices, motions, oral arguments and costs.
This course provides a foundational understanding of federal appellate practice, answering frequently asked questions about procedures, strategies, and best practices. Participants will learn about jurisdictional requirements, briefing standards, oral arguments, and common pitfalls in federal appeals. Designed for attorneys, law clerks, and legal professionals, this course equips attendees with the knowledge needed to navigate the federal appellate process effectively.

Ms. Mouquin is a seasoned trial and appellate litigator, having handled and tried cases in Rhode Island Supreme and Superior Courts and the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. Her practice focused on complex litigation, professional liability matters, insurance coverage, zoning board actions, and mass tort cases. During law school, Ms. Mouquin served as a judicial extern to Chief Justice Frank J. Williams of the Rhode Island Supreme Court and as an intern in the Appellate Division of the Rhode Island Public Defender’s Office. Ms. Mouquin even spent time in the United Kingdom as a marshal, sitting with a Crown Court judge to assist in hearing a complex criminal trial. Before becoming a lawyer, Ms. Mouquin devoted several years working with domestic violence victims and their families developing educational and interventional programs.

Maryna Sapyelkina has 15 years of expertise and knowledge assisting clients with their filings in various appellate courts. In addition to her appellate expertise, Ms. Sapyelkina brings her extensive experience as a litigation paralegal, having worked on numerous cases at the trial levels in federal and state courts. Ms. Sapyelkina’s main areas of expertise fall within the New Jersey Appellate Courts and the Federal Circuit Courts of Appeals. Ms. Sapyelkina works closely with the attorneys and support staff, guiding them through the rules and strategies of appellate practice ensuring compliance with the rules and procedures.
