Pro Bono Representation: Help the Profession Help Others

ABA Model Rule 6.1 establishes professional responsibility to provide pro bono service. Specific rules or goals may vary by state, but the ABA Model Rule encompasses the basic aspirational goals involved, and in his program, attorney Russell Jackman reviews specific ways in which lawyers can provide pro bono services and, thereby, better both society and the profession. Under the ABA Model Rule 6.1, every lawyer should aspire to render at least 50 hours of pro bono publico legal services per year.
To fulfill this responsibility, the lawyer should provide a substantial majority of the 50 hours of legal service without fee or expectation of fee, to: persons of limited means or charitable, religious, civic, community, governmental and educational organizations in matters which are designed primarily to address the needs of persons of limited means and participate in activities which improve the law, the legal system or the legal profession. Mr. Jackman offers many examples of how attorneys can do so, along with substantial data on the subject and ways in which lawyers can get involved.
