Master the use of epidemiologic evidence in legal cases involving toxic torts, pharmaceutical liability, and more.

This program will cover topics frequently encountered by attorneys when dealing with epidemiologic evidence and its bearing on causation, including: interpreting epidemiological studies, evaluating the strength of evidence on causation, the use and misuse of statistical significance testing, meta-analysis, and interpreting negative studies.
It will also address how courts have dealt with epidemiology in determining general causation and deciding Daubert, and Frye motions, as well as provide suggestions for direct and cross-examination of epidemiology experts.

Professor of Epidemiology in the Brown University School of Public Health
David Savitz is Professor of Epidemiology in the Brown University School of Public Health with joint appointments as a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics in the Alpert Medical School. From 2013 - 2017, Dr. Savitz served as the vice president for research at Brown University. He came to Brown in 2010 from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and previously taught and conducted research at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health and at the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. His epidemiologic research has addressed a wide range of topics including exposures to physical and chemical hazards in the workplace and community, the health impact of exposures associated with military deployment, environmental effects of energy development, risks from environmental exposures during pregnancy, and drinking water safety. He has authored more than 400 papers in professional journals and is the editor or author of four books on environmental epidemiology. Dr. Savitz received his undergraduate training in Psychology at Brandeis University, holds a master's degree in preventive medicine from The Ohio State University, and received his Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.

Stephen has been a partner at Faraci Lange, LLP since 1988 and served as managing partner from 1995-2023. He focuses his legal practice on product liability, toxic tort, and environmental contamination, medical malpractice, and other serious personal injury cases in both state and federal courts. Stephen has been awarded Martindale-Hubbell's highest rating and has been named Best Lawyers' Lawyer of the Year in Product Liability Litigation, Medical Malpractice, and in Personal Injury Litigation multiple times. Stephen is a former Regent of the American College of Trial Lawyers, where he had responsibility for Upstate New York as well as Ontario and Quebec. Stephen recently co-authored a book with David Savitz, Ph.D., entitled Epidemiology and the Law, published by Juris Publishing. He has published numerous articles in the Journal of the American College of Trial Lawyers, including Artificial Intelligence/Superficial Lawyering, which chronicled the disastrous results for two lawyers who relied upon ChatGPT to write their brief in federal court, published in the June 2023 edition of the ACTL Journal. He has published numerous additional articles in other legal publications such as the New York Bar Journal and Trial Magazine. Stephen is a graduate of the State University of New York at Albany and Albany Law School.
